A Bit about Smith Mountain Lake

Smith Mountain Lake is over 20,000 acres and it has 500 miles of coastline.  It is known as the jewel of Virginia for its pristine beauty.  It was created in 1966 when engineers dammed the Backwater and Roanoke rivers and flooded Smith Mountain Gap which now provides electricity for the surrounding communities. The lake is a great place for families that want to get away from the crowds and be close to nature. Try having a picnic on one of the many islands on the lake, water skiing or golfing at Mariners Landing where you receive a 50% reduction on green fees, excluding golf cart fees when you rent one of our homes. The lake is the perfect destination for your very own style of fun, whether you seek days full of activities or just plain relaxing. The lake offers fabulous swimming, hiking, boating, shopping opportunities from antique to art galleries, dining and entertainment options, fascinating historical sightseeing, and simply sitting back and enjoying the glorious scenery  It is also renowned as one of the best fishing lakes in the country. It is not unusual for guests to catch 20 to 30 pound striped bass right off our dock!
